Yu-Gi-Oh Card Rarities explained
Yu-Gi-Oh! card rarities can be confusing because many of them look similar. Here is a simplified version of the Transcend Cards guide to help you identify what you have.
The Basic Rarities (Most Common)
-
Common: No special effects. Plain text name and no foil on the art.

-
Rare: The card name is silver, but the artwork is not shiny.

-
Super Rare: The artwork is holographic, but the card name is plain (black or white).

-
Ultra Rare: The best of both—the card name is gold and the artwork is holographic.

The "Shiny" Favorites
-
Secret Rare: The card name is rainbow/silver, and the artwork has a diagonal "sparkle" pattern.

-
Prismatic Secret Rare: Similar to Secret Rare, but the sparkles are in a vertical and horizontal grid pattern.
-
Ultimate Rare: These feel textured. They have embossed (raised) foil on the artwork, the stars, and the borders. The name is usually gold.

-
Ghost Rare: The artwork looks like a faint, 3D hologram. When you tilt the card, the monster looks like a pale "ghost."

Premium & Special Rarities
-
Collector’s Rare: Features a very shiny, etched texture on the card borders and artwork. It feels "rougher" to the touch than a standard card.
-
Starlight Rare: One of the most expensive rarities. The entire card (including the borders) has a heavy, shimmering prismatic foil.
-
Quarter Century Secret Rare: Released for the 25th Anniversary. It looks like a Starlight Rare but features a "25th Anniversary" watermark in the text box.
-
Gold Rare: Easy to spot because the entire border of the card is gold, along with the name and artwork.
