Yu-Gi-Oh!: Joey's 10 Coolest Monsters

Joey has picked up some incredibly cool monsters throughout the years in Yu-Gi-Oh! Here are the 10 best examples.

Save for Yugi Muto and Seto Kaiba, the strongest and most recognizable duelist in the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime is Joey Wheeler, a strong character who truly never gets the recognition that he deserves for his growth throughout the course of the series.

Joey started out as a novice before making it to the finals of tournaments like Duelist Kingdom and Battle City, and his deck grew along with him throughout his challenges. As his deck has grown, he's picked up some incredibly cool monsters throughout the years. This list is in no particular order.

10. Gilford The Lightning

Gilford the Lightning is easily one of Joey's coolest monsters. He's an incredibly strong warrior who can wield the power of lightning, what's not to love here? Gilford's incredible power also gives him the ability to wipe out his opponent's entire monster row, showcasing the raw power of this creature. Gilford the Lightning really should have been Joey's ace monster over some others on this list.

9. Red-Eyes Black Dragon

Red-Eyes Black Dragon, though, is Joey's ace monster, making appearance after appearance throughout the anime. Joey originally won Red-Eyes Black Dragon from Rex Raptor during the Duelist Kingdom arc of the series and continued to use it throughout the various arcs of the show. With its jet-black appearance and striking red eyes, this is a dragon that you just don't want to mess with. It's not the only dragon on the list, however.

8. The Claw Of Hermos

The Claw Of Hermos Card Art

The Claw of Hermos is the card that Joey was gifted in order to take on Dartz and The Seal of Orichalcos during the Waking the Dragons arc of the show, and boy, it saved him. He would have lost to Mai in their first duel of the season had this card not appeared in his deck.

The Claw of Hermos could fuse with Joey's monsters in order to create weapons for his other monsters to wield, which was super cool. Unfortunately, this means that we didn't see the actual dragon Hermos too often, because it was too busy fusing with other cards.

7. Time Wizard

Yugioh Time Wizard

Time Wizard might not necessarily look like the other "cool" monsters on this list, but it more than earns the title. While it's basically worthless in the real-life game, it's an incredibly strong monster in the anime that fits perfectly with Joey's chance deck, as it can win you the duel or lose it pretty easily, all depending on the flip of a card. This wizard holds a lot of power in its little clock-like hands.

6. Flame Swordsman

Yugioh Flame Swordsman

Flame Swordsman is another one of Joey's ace monsters, with this card taking on the role of Deck Master for Joey while the group was in Noah's Virtual World. Despite all the anime nonsense that went on with the monster's summoning conditions during the anime, Flame Swordsman is still an incredibly cool monster that radiates power. While his outfit might be a bit silly, it more than makes up for that with its raw power many times over. That sword? Oof.

5. Jinzo

Yugioh Jinzo

Jinzo was won by Joey from Espa Roba during the Battle City tournament, and it went on to be one of Joey's strongest monsters, as it completely disables trap cards from both players, which can be harnessed to make 1/3 of the opponent's deck completely worthless.

Jinzo's not exactly a looker, but when you see its massive presence standing on the field, it generates an aura that enemies really should steer clear of. Jinzo will make you regret it, if not.

4. Cyber Harpie Lady

Yugioh Cyber Harpie

Cyber Harpie Lady is a card that was used by Joey during the Virtual World arc to honor Mai, who was still trapped in the Shadow Realm after her duel with Marik. Cyber Harpie is a super cool monster, coming pre-equipped with Cyber Shield, making her a stronger pick than the regular Harpie Lady. She can gracefully fly to the other side of the field and wipe out her enemies with ease.

3. Aura Armor

Aura Armor is the card that Joey used to summon his armor cards to counter Valon's in their duel. This was absolutely a card that Joey totally had before this duel, yeah, for sure, of course. Obviously. While this duel was incredibly silly to watch, it was dumb fun, and Joey equipping his own armor to punch Valon in the face a few times was a great time. To be fair, Valon needed to be punched in the face a few more times.

2. Gearfried The Iron Knight

Yugioh Gearfried The Iron Knight

Gearfried the Iron Knight is one of Joey's most-used warrior cards and was the key in his victory against Weevil during the Battle City tournament. While its unleashed form is super cool, Gearfried itself is an awesome monster, wearing the armor to restrain itself from its full power, which is too much. And that sword-like arm is a great touch to show the sheer power that this monster holds.

1. Brigadier Of Landstar

Joey used a bunch of new Landstar cards during the KC Grand Championship and for seemingly no reason one of them had a massive gun (censored in the West, of course). It all felt very unnecessary but look at this guy. He's ready to kill. Give him his credit. He's earned it.
