Yu-Gi-Oh: Best Dragon Xyz Monsters

Yu-Gi-Oh: Best Dragon Xyz Monsters

There’s no question that Dragon monsters are almost always the most powerful monsters in Yu-Gi-Oh. Here are the best of the Xyz era.

There’s no question that Dragon monsters are almost always the most powerful monsters in the game. They have the biggest attack, and usually some of the best effects. It helps that since Yu-Gi-Oh 5D’s, the main character has always had an ace monster that’s also a Dragon-Type. In the Xyz era, Konami continued the trend by printing some of the best cards in the game under the Dragon-Type.

This list looks at some of the most powerful dragon Xyz monsters that were ever created. The list takes into account cards being more playable during older eras, as well as their current standings and playability.

10. QUEEN DRAGUN DJINN

Yugioh QUEEN DRAGUN DJINN

Made up of two level-4 monsters, Queen Dragun stops any Dragon-Type monsters from being destroyed by battle other than itself. It can also detach a material from itself to target a level 5 or higher Dragon in the graveyard and special summon it to the field.

It can’t attack and its effects are negated, but that’s one additional creature to go into another monster. This card is the best kind of enabler during its era.

9. NUMBER 107: GALAXY-EYES TACHYON DRAGON

Yugioh NUMBER 107: GALAXY-EYES TACHYON DRAGON

During the battle phase, this card can detach a material to negate the effect of every other monster on the field. It also makes every monster’s attack become its original attack and defense.

At three thousand attack, it’s not going to have problems getting over much, but boosted cards aren’t safe. If somehow an opponent’s effect resolves anyway this turn, the Dragon gains another 1000 ATK and can attack again.

8. HIERATIC SUN DRAGON OVERLORD OF HELIOPOLIS

Another legitimate auto-include for any level 8 focused deck. This monster is meant to be the boss monster for Hieratics but it’s generic so any deck that can spit out level 8s easily can put this on board.

By detaching a material, the player can tribute monsters from their hand or field to destroy cards on the field. This doesn’t say target, so plenty of monsters would just get obliterated.

7. RED-EYES FLARE METAL DRAGON

Yugioh RED-EYES FLARE METAL DRAGON

One of the best Rank 7 monsters that were never banned. Red-Eyes Flare Metal Dragon can’t be destroyed by card effects while it has materials, which means the only way to beat it is by running it over.

It also inflicts 500 damage for each card or effect activated, which means the opponent can’t actually play around with the mass summoning and has to run over Red-Eyes immediately. It can also special summon Red-Eyes Normal monsters from the graveyard by detaching, but most decks will never use this ability.

6. DARK REBELLION XYZ DRAGON

Yugioh DARK REBELLION XYZ DRAGON

Dark Rebellion is a Rank 4 Dragon that’s capable of being summoned by any deck. It’s got 2500 ATK, and by detaching two materials from it, players can target a monster the opponent controls, making it’s ATK become half it’s normal attack and giving that other half to Dark Rebellion.

This means Dark Rebellion can get over any monster and always inflict it’s 2500 ATK. But what’s interesting is it seems to keep this ATK boost, meaning it’ll remain that large until destroyed.

5. EVOLZAR DOLKKA

Yugioh EVOLZAR DOLKKA

Dolkka is made up of two level-4 dinosaur monsters, which is why everyone doesn’t use it all the time.

During either player’s turn, when an opponent activates a monster effect, they can detach a material and negate that activation, destroying that monster. Dolkka stops small boards from becoming larger boards, shutting the opponent out.

4. EVOLZAR LAGGIA

Another monster that’s composed wholly of dinosaur monsters. Laggia was able to negate summons and spell and trap activations by detaching its materials.

In essence, this made Evolzar Laggia into a Solemn Judgment with a body attached and without any need to pay life points. 2400 ATK isn’t very big, but when it can stop even a normal summon, it doesn’t need to be that powerful.

3. NUMBER 38: HOPE HARBINGER DRAGON TITANIC GALAXY

Yugioh NUMBER 38: HOPE HARBINGER DRAGON TITANIC GALAXY

Hope Harbinger is an amazing card for any deck that can make two level 8s. Capable of negating spells on the field and attaching the spell as a material, it’s a good way to stop power cards like Raigeki or Lightning Storm.

Then, when an opponent tries to attack another monster, the player can detach a material and make the monster attack Hope Harbinger instead. The second best effect on this though is if another Xyz the player has is destroyed, they can make any other Xyz gain attack equal to the destroyed monster’s attack, making Hope Harbinger even bigger.

2. NUMBER 62: GALAXY-EYES PRIME PHOTON DRAGON

Yugioh NUMBER 62: GALAXY-EYES PRIME PHOTON DRAGON

Made up of two level-8 monsters, Prime Photon Dragon is able to detach a material to gain attack equal to the combined ranks of all Xyz monsters on the field times 200. It already boasts 4000 ATK, so this means it can run over almost any monster an opponent could summon.

If this card is destroyed by card effect while having a regular Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon equipped, this card can be special summoned back during the second standby phase with its ATK doubled. This card is an OTK machine, though without Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon as a material whatever damage it deals gets halved.

1. NUMBER 95: GALAXY-EYES DARK MATTER DRAGON

Yugioh NUMBER 95: GALAXY-EYES DARK MATTER DRAGON

Banned both in the TCG and OCG, Dark Matter Dragon is made up of three level-9 monsters, but it can be bypassed by using a Galaxy-Eyes Xyz monster. Upon being summoned, the player can send three Dragon-Type monsters to the grave and make the opponent banish three other monsters from their deck.

The monster can also detach a material from itself to attack monsters twice. This card was part of enough frustrating OTK decks that it wound up getting banned.
